DNS is short for Domain Name System or Domain Name Server. It is a standard technology to manage website domain names and server IP addresses over the internet.
It is a system developed to make the website addresses simpler and easy to remember. Servers are identified by their IP addresses which are actually a string of numbers just like our phone number and so our websites were also named with their respective server IP addresses. This made it difficult to remember, distinguish and identify a website by its IP address.
DNS allows to name websites in a more human friendly form i.e. an alphanumeric website name. Whenever we type website’s name in our browser, the DNS will convert that into an IP address and locate the server and make the connection. As an analogy, DNS serves as the “Phone Book” of internet as it translates computer hostnames into IP addresses.
